Ya know what....I'm going to have to say that I may be in agreement. I'm not an expert on picking up trains. I'm the one that calls Hulcher/Coreman and asks them to come in. But as to evaluating the relative safety of the process...I'll leave that up to other experts.
So...you may be right on this one.

They are cheaper and in light jobs may get done faster, but I have to disagree with the safer comment, We always worked safe,

But all in all the reason they are used is that they are cheaper, faster, and safer.

Why bring an excavator to a train wreck, gonna dig a hole and put all the stuff in it?
Push and pull ain't gonna get it up in the air, if nothing it will push it over on some poor soul trying to make a living.
Such stupid handling, don't care for contractors anyway, get the big rig in there and lift the whole thing, roll wheels under and away you go.....

Good video 58 and a favorite. During my career I went to many derailments like this. We use to use a derrick now the contractors with the side winders do it all. They do more damage getting the site cleaned up than we ever did.

Good stuff, glad I wasn't taking Lakeshore trains that day.
I guess you got to keep the brothers,"union boys" working. Why hire one large machin operator when you can get three large machine operators.

Thanks pwalpar . You're right about the damage the sidewinders do. After that one did a 90 degree turn, the rails were bent.
