America's new poor fending for food stamps

A surprising number of Americans are receiving federal government issued food stamps in the growing new social class called the "new poor." Mark Strassmann reports on the formally well off families who were once full of food and rich futures, but now are now destitute.

1600 a month. DAMN! I've got a degree and I only made that kind of money when I worked 60+ hours a week consecutively. I wouldn't cry about 1600/mo. If three/four people can't eat and keep a roof over their head on that...plus the food stamps, then I have no sympathy. I provide for myself and my spouse and three cats on $1k/mo and no food stamps.

@savgal1211 :Great for her!! My mother is the same way. Hardest working woman I know. Working into your older days because you enjoy working is one thing. Working as an elderly because you have to to survive is another. Avoiding the latter for me is a societal priority in my opinion... Happy belated birthday to your mom! :-)

@savgal1211 : you do know that bragging that your parents still have to work at 83 and 76 is a disgrace right? This is the time they should be enjoying the fruit of their hard work. That is how societies that do it better do it. But Americans (of which I am) somehow take pride in that our elderly HAVE to work... This is INSANE.

I, as well, have a Dual income home, and make 6 figures but ALL Fiat is spent on ( the extra), SILVER, Guns, food storage, my Reloader, Fod storage of 2.5 yrs, etc etc. I have been radying for the REAL SHTF for almost 3 yrs now, All extra cash goes for tangibles to SURVIVE! 2001 was not ANYTHING compared to what real COLLAPSE will be! Learn to be a hunter, fisher, garden, watch the WAltons!! Learn how we were meant to live, off the land, Get land with a water source and leave cities!!

I Feel bad for those in need. BUT, Why in the Hell is this woman downloading a child KNOWING they can't afford it!! He is a good man for being of service, but, why have another child? "I know" She thought "More Bennies" !! BTW, My parents STILL run a smal biz and are 83 and 76! They work 10 hrs a day and enjoy it, but they do require the income. They , and my 2 brothers , live in mobile homes, paid off YEARS ago, and have land and lived WAY below their means.. THAT is how ya do it!!
