TRAINER VERSION - For people who want all the details. This shows the real-time training of simple tricks "wave" and "shake", plus additional practicing. All video was shot the same day -- split into two sessions. Notice how quickly the parrots learned these tricks!

"Trainer Version" means that the boring parts (like waiting for the bird to eat her reward, or listening to the trainer say "good girl" several times) are left intact so someone who is interested in viewing our training process can see the whole interaction between the bird and human, and the actual timing of the session.

If you just want to be entertained, or just want to watch the actual tricks performed, please watch the EDITED version -- it's more fun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y721UjycylE

Please keep in mind that we are NOT professional trainers. We rely strictly on the intelligence of our birds when we teach them tricks, which doesn't work in all situations. We recommend that if you are interested in training your parrots, that you visit the site of a professional trainer to learn proper training techniques.

  • hi i just want to know which treats to feed my congo african grey when training?

  • @larraineify if you use food, greys tend to really like almonds, apples, peanuts (unsalted of course), sunflower seeds, and safflower seeds. test those to determine your bird's favorite. it is easier to use something small and dry with no shells. however, i use safflower with my grey--they are healthier than peanuts and sunflower, or i will break up almond pieces. once you find your bird's fave food, then don't offer that food any other time except as a reward for training.

  • @larraineify by definition, a 'treat' is something your bird would find pleasing. therefore, each bird is different--not all birds like the same things. you will have to find out what is the most irresistible thing for your own bird.

it isn't always food that is the fave thing--could be a scritch or a toy or something else. food is easiest--although it can create problems that the bird associates food with the activities, and is always looking for a food reward. find what works for you.

  • I have tried ur techniques and i would just like to say that they WORKED it took my bird Baby 2 days to do these tricks. But, i can only get her to do them for treats is this ok or do i need to do something to change this so she will without treats???!!!!??

  • @freetse7 for now, it's fine that she is food-motivated. course, it's better when a pet bird enjoys the activity enough to do it because it's fun, but she'll get there. do you praise Baby with words when she does it well? does she react to that praise?

there are 'treats' other than food...does your baby enjoy it when you scritch her, or rub her beak or any other activity? start rewarding her with other kinds of 'treats', and then she will begin to associate the activity with other good things.

  • my green cheek conure just sits there

i tried mover his foot up but he still doesnt grasp the concept

    tips??

  • @skateer25 - is he attentive when you are working with him, or is he distracted?

if distracted, he won't understand picking up the foot.

also, are you using food treats for good job? if not, you should try that. but if you are, they may not be the right treat--find something more enticing.

you don't need to treat, but if you want to get a bird's attention, treats really help. LOL

if he IS attentive, then you need more repetition-- lift...reward...lift...reward, while using word cues too.

  • I just do not know what else to write I watched almost all your videos " I will watch then all" And I am so in love with all your techniques and I am also in love with zorro she was just cute when waiving to get more seed. Just Beautiful!

  • Excellent job. Technique worth trying :)

  • not that hard. that's the point of these videos! we're not professionals- we rely on the intelligence of the birds. some of the keys to that is...

    * try to be consistent with the signals you give your parrot so they will trust you

    * consistency will help them when they try to figure out what you mean when you communicate with them

treat them like a little kid- assume they need love, attention, and a lot of patience as you show them what you want.

...and make sure you read up before buying!
