@1401JSC Do they have closed vowels in Turin? They are more open than in Naples! lol

Directed by Giorgio Strehler!!! Great!!!

And the winners are...
Thomas Allen and Susanne Mentzer...
Best Duet: "Là ci darem la mano"

Sorry, I appreciate this debate but... I am Italian. The vowels are definitely correct. It's strange also to me hearing such a good Italian spoken by two strangers (Allen and Mentzer).
-
I think the best italian vowels are a combination of the two, where all vowels aren't closed or open--for instance closer to the vowels of Tuscany.
-
Mozart didn't have access to 19th century classifications of voice.
Elvira, Anna and Zerlina (as wel as Countess, Susanna & Cherubino) are all "Soprani" in his scores.

The singers are not Italian. Much depends on coaching. In 1980s England, we favoured the closed vowels of Turin rather than the open vowels of Naples.
Nowadays, coaches mar prefer giving closed vowels to the noble DG and open vowels to the peasant Z!
Buona interpretazione e costumi appropriati... Si può dire ke sia una buona versione anche psicologica... Direttore operistico
