You're not British, are you. Anne Widdecombe is a very well known politician in the UK, who renounced the Anglican church for Catholicism over the ordination of women priests. When she was a Minister in the Home Office, the Press dubbed her "Doris Karloff".
I'm not sure fair or bias comes into it. The audience was largely anti the church as shown in the before votes. It was the job of those proposing the motion to reduce that number, and so feeble was their performance, they actually increased it. As an ex-catholic I wanted to be persuaded of their argument, but the proposers were murdered by Hitchens and Fry.
Brother, be assured you were not. The maniacal old hag screeches like a vulture, elaborates in the manner of crows, speaks with the vocal consistency of a diseased raven. The false wisdom of Catholic sophistry inhabits her. Such vermin represents the malignant vandals who have tortured, raped and slain our brothers since the formation of their lie in the lustful quest for wealth and power. Their crimes must not be given license to continue.
I attended this debate, and in retrospect, while enjoying Hitch and Fry immensely, I'm inclined to look back on the event as something of a farce. Against such a force, were an hopelessly out of touch bishop and a political has been, the best the catholic church could come up with to defend itself? Says it all.
