You already knew that Ken has no heart, now we find out that he has no brain, either!
That's right, Ken can stop his brainwaves on demand. Actually—and in a more serious vein—this is the famous EEG machine recording where Ken enters various meditative states, one of which is a type of "thoughtless," "image-less," or "formless" state, whose correlate is that his brainwaves come to an almost complete stop, as clearly recorded on this portable electroencephalograph (EEG) machine. (This video is discussed in One Taste, April 10 entry.)
We asked Ken to do a short 10-minute commentary on these various meditative states and the corresponding brain-wave patterns that are shown on the EEG machine in the video. Ken enters four meditative states (nirvikalpa closed eyes, nirvikalpa open eyes, sahaj, and mantra-savikalpa), each of which has a very distinctive brain-wave pattern. In his commentary, Ken emphasizes that the patterns shown on this machine may or may not be typical, but they do emphasize that profound consciousness states can be evoked at will, and these show immediate correlation in brain-wave patterns.
If nothing else, seeing somebody's brainwaves flatline in about 4 seconds is a sight not easily forgotten! It also explains why we once heard Ken's girlfriend say, upon delivering news that she thought might not be happily received, "Now, um, honey, make your brain waves go to zero...."
More seriously, as Ken often says, "If you want to know God, you've got to get your brain out of the way first. It's just one big stupid filter...."

Can you be certain Wilber was the one to post it, or additionally, name it? And perhaps he was demonstrating something of interest, not a special technique unattainable by others. Not only am I somewhat familiar with EEG machines, with my extensive background in sciences and psychology, but meditate as well, and for those reasons find it impressive and useful as a preliminary view into the field of transcendental psychology.
If he is not showing some kind of special ability, why would he post this video? Why would he title it "Ken Wilbur stops his brain waves" instead of something more tutorial, like "controlling your brain waves" or even just "EEG demonstration"? The title itself is misleading - He is not "stopping his brainwaves"! I think if you learn more about EEGs instead of just giving me some reactionary response you'll change your opinion.
Point out the part where he claims to be special? If you can't, I will assume youre projecting onto him your own feelings of superiority. If this is untrue, then perhaps you should carry out further research into this mans philosophical, intellectual, psychological, transcendental, integral, etc, contributions to the fields just listed prior to making such conclusions. Also, as he has been meditating for most of his life, many would bestow him the title of meditation guru.
Well once you learn about EEGs in detail and then see this video trying to make it look like this man is some kind of meditative guru when he's doing a fairly simple task it tends to upset you. Yes, it is an interesting video no doubt, but this man is trying to make it look like he is special somehow when he isn't.
Well, this seems impressing, but there is a cut right before he goes in to the "no brainwave" state. Not that I really think he's cheating let's be real and say he could be. You could also wonder why he keeps having oen hand on the back of his head at the place of some electrodes..? Isn't no brainwave activity equal to death?? while im writing, i have an interesting tip for you guys here. some new sound technology.. it's amazing.: watch?v=2_a-Yh5FTaE .
Near-death experiences, one can be medically dead for a couple of mins. and still be revived. For the most part this video merely pointing out that we can control our brain wave activity (make the brain generate alpha waves with meditation (while conscious) or during the REM sleep cycle (while unconscious) ). There is empirical evidence of this via brain wave monitoring.
Same deal applies to theta, meta, and beta brain waves. We can control all these states. Course it is easiest to control the beta state of mind because we mostly generate beta waves during the process of conducting conscious daily activities (not sleeping or meditating).
