Step 1: Gather the Ingredients

The chai latte is not a complicated beverage, requiring surprisingly few ingredients. Although most of these spices are commonly found in India, some of them may not be available in your neighborhood grocery store. The following spices can be used in the preparation of chai lattes:

* Green cardamom

* Cinnamon

* Cloves

* Peppercorns

* Fresh ginger root

* Fresh orange peel

* Ajwain

* Allspice berries

* Coriander

* Dark chocolate3

* Fennel

* Licorice root

* Nutmeg

* Vanilla beans

Of course, the basic ingredients are the following:

* Black tea bag or leaves

* Milk

* Hot water

* Sweetener

Step 2: Steep the Tea

There are several ways to prepare a Chai Latte, dependent on personal preference. Some people believe that tea leaves should never be boiled. If you belong to this camp, then you'll want to take some clean hot water and pour it over the spices and the tea, allowing them to steep until you have your desired color and aroma.

Step 3: Add Milk and Spices

The chai is now ready. In order to turn it into a chai latte, you must add milk. Heat the milk on medium heat. Remove from heat just before it boils. Once it has reached the intended temperature, add sugar or your preferred sweetener if you wish to sweeten the beverage. Stir until the sweetener is dissolved. Strain the chai away from the tea and spices, add the milk and garnish with shaved chocolate, ground nutmeg or a fresh orange peel.

  • Hate to tell all you "chai experts" that some of the best chai on the market is a powder form. Made by Big Train and easily blows away all liquid forms. I know because it's the only chai I will serve and my customers tell me it blows all else away, especially that fake crap from Charbux. Also very cost effective when compared to the liquid garbage such as Oregon, Tazo, etc.

  • Ideal my ass. The powder is a fail.
