p-zombie 2007. Murray McKeich
Looping video 1 min 40 secs. This video art work was designed for exhibition in a vertical/portrait orientation but is presented here in horizontal/landscape format. The work was created generatively using Adobe After Effects software.
The following text accompanied the works exhibition at the Australian Centre for Photography, Sydney 2007.
Murray McKeich's p-zombie is a work of 'generative art': it was made by a machine. Stepping back from direct involvement in production, the maker of generative art operates at one remove. He designs the software, provided the raw materials -- in this case textures scanned of objects and fabrics -- and sets the criteria within which the process of making will occur. However, the final selection of texture elements and their assembly into the final image is left to the computer.
A p-zombie or 'philosophical zombie' is a hypothetical being proposed by theorists of computing and consciousness studies. It is indistinguishable from a normal human being except that it lacks conscious experience. A p-zombie exhibits all of the outwards signs and responses you would expect from a living human but does so mechanically without the underlying sentience. So, the philosophical conundrum asks, how can we know the difference between a conscious being and a zombie (or a computer)?

This...I love. Disturbingly cool. But I do not understande how AE did this ? It's not really meant for character animation, so what's it doing? Almost looks like morphing is moving the mouth. Ah, who cares, it looks really cool in my opinion.
