BBC Two's overpopulation programme "Horizon: 2009-2010: How Many People Can Live on Planet Earth?" in HD.

Synopsis:

"In a Horizon special, naturalist Sir David Attenborough investigates whether the world is heading for a population crisis.

In his lengthy career, Sir David has watched the human population more than double from 2.5 billion in 1950 to nearly seven billion. He reflects on the profound effects of this rapid growth, both on humans and the environment.

While much of the projected growth in human population is likely to come from the developing world, it is the lifestyle enjoyed by many in the West that has the most impact on the planet. Some experts claim that in the UK consumers use as much as two and a half times their fair share of Earth's resources.

Sir David examines whether it is the duty of individuals to commit not only to smaller families, but to change the way they live for the sake of humanity and planet Earth."

  • @trendsetter74 Overpopulation has nothing to do with eugenics. Overpopulation means a population over the limits of nature. Right now, more than 1 billion people do not have enough food and water to survive. The reason for this is because there is not enough arable land left to cultivate food and there is not enough supply of water. The only way to fix this is by solving overpopulation. If most people have 2 or less children and some 3, the population will actually lower and life will improve.

  • @bomerman104 There'll be no end of the world in 2012... and we should not die in the future due to pollution, have hope!

  • If we could only replace 1,000,000 of the world's population with 1,000,000 David Attenboroughs, how much better would the world be? My goodness, he's remarkable.

  • @LordNadir1 -

we have to make the mothers pay!

  • it's all our fault, we enjoy blaming our governments for our problems yet we have so many children that we can't afford to help them all and each one consumes more resources yet we want to blame it on out politicians. when we have so many children we can't even afford to pay income tax! so who are we to blame anyone but ourselves!!!!????

  • @walter0bz actually throughout history in every culture on earth, typically, the people with more resources, and personal security have fewer children. The brutal thing is, it is those people who can least afford to care for their children that have the most children. Despite this fact, governments are constantly called on the do something about child poverty. It is funny in the most horrible way.

  • @Bobalex88 Yeah Billy Bob!! Lets kill those fags, niggers, muds, Chinese, Japanese ,non gun having fools. I hope you know your stupid. If you dont you do now.

  • one billion is one human too much.

  • @Bobalex88 -

So you are focussing on a recent cultural shift that means people have fewer babies, and you assume it would last indefintely.

But - in our present Overpopulated state (i.e. you cannot survive without industrial food ) it is the correct solution. Fewer babies is a good sign. I dont beleive its elite brainwashing.

I think when population density was low enough i.e. more families have enough land to control their own lives, people would naturally go back to breeding more.

  • @Bobalex88 -

Thanks for discussing constructively, I will further explain my idea.

We set *global* TFR = 1.0 for 2 complete generations, then relax the rule. World population will be back at the level earth can sustain without needing to burn finite resources. Genocidal (possibly nuclear) wars are avoided. everyones' genes/culture survives.

  • Remember Noe ? Everything will be okay.
