Albert Saveen (or just "Saveen" as he was known) was a ventriloquist who had fourteen puppet characters including Daisy May - a tiny schoolgirl dummy, Andy the Spiv - a cockney boy, a sad little boy adopted by Daisy May called Sonny and a dog who used to say "Drop Dead!" in a very droll posh voice whenever Mr. Saveen or Daisy spoke to him.
During part of the show, the dummy dog (on the right in the video) would bark incessantly. Saveen would tell it to be quiet, whereupon it would reply in a posh voice "No I won't ! ". A little later in the act, Saveen would point out the dog on the left, sat rock still on a chair. The dummy dog would sniff him, ask if he could talk and suggest that he was stupid. At the end of the act, the dog on the chair (called Mickey) would open a false lower jaw (operated by Saveen) and say "Why don't you shut that ruddy dog up!" and then jump down and walk away, being a very well trained real dog

  • Sadly that is where they will stay for probably longer than my life...... if they havn't been used for landfill. I was part of L Donegan's backing for "All you need is Love" series ---- bought it - I must be somewhere on the cutting room floor!! Thanks again for sharing and replying. If you are a vent do you know Len Belmont?

  • @happymanoftheworld I'm not a vent, sorry!

  • Absolutely wonderful Thank you very much for sharing this with us. Do you know if this is the only remaining clip of Saveen anywhere? Many thanks again.

  • @happymanoftheworld I haven't seen any others but I except that there may be some footage in the BBC Archives.

  • Saveen was wonderful, the dog was real which made it such a super act. He was part of the old variety circuit, along with acts like Wilson Keplle and Betty and many others who inhabited the old variety stages, the likes of which we will never see again.

  • I am exactly the same as Pigeon5813. I saw this act when i was a child and i was unable to stop laughing , tears down my eyes...When i tell people about it they think i'm mad. Saveen's name came up in my mind and i typed it in. Soo glad i did as i too never thought i would see it again, priceless! Thanks so much.

  • Just great to see this again. Used to love this act. I sometimes wonder where Daisy May recording might be? A real treat. Thank you.

  • When I was still at school, I worked backstage for a summer season at the New Royal Theatre in Bournemouth. Daisy May and Saveen were on the bill. Wondeful act from a charming man - great to see it again.

  • Great clip - been waiting to see this again for years

  • I saw Saveen I loved the end when the real Dog would just say "Shut Up!" I never thought I would see a clip of him on here it has made my day, Thankyou.
