  • y6bs sounded like 1218 i fact i think all of N&W mallets did!

  • @david245611 Actually, the Y class engines had an entirely different sound. They had a "slosshy" sound which you can hear in this preview. The A class has a sharper exhaust. The Y class could run in either compound or simple settings and each of those had a different sound. If you go to the preview of Pocahontas Glory Vol. 7, you can hear actual sounds of a Y6 on a mine run where it was recorded in both compound and simple operation.

  • Your 5 inch gauge Y6b is also awesome! Since you like N&W and Y6 class engines, check out the preview of Pocahontas Glory Volume 7, also here on You Tube. You'll find Y6 class locos in all of the Pocahontas Glory videos plus A, J, K, M, and S1 class steam power, all in actual service in the 1950's. We ship to Germany frequently. -JH

  • Amazing: when passing the Y6b at the front of the train, from 0.59 to 1:06 the raising steam from the helper at the rear is visible and gives an impression of the length of this train. Excellent video! Thank you!

  • @beowulf3075 Yep. You folks over there have some pretty good passenger trains, but North America has some awesome freight!

  • i liked the part of the helper cutting off on the fly,, you are not permitted to do that today.

  • As a Brit it always comes as a bit of a shock at the sheer size of the locos and the lengths of the trains. Impressive shots in this video, pretty countryside as well. Great stuff !

  • @IllinoisTrains1 if you properly bank the fire, a steam locomotive can go a day or two without attention. By that i mean they can sit idle with a hot fire to keep pressure at a certain level. this saves coal and eliminates the need for a night hostler. It must be done properly though or it wont work correctly. steam does have its efficiencies over diesels too, but the overall easy diesel out modes steam efficiencies.

  • cool Y6b

  • @hrvideo thanks
