Yeh I was just comming back from the underground hallow and then around 2 minutes afking in my slime farm he spawned and killed all of my npcs except the guide. Good thing I was ready for him. Is that supposed to happen randomly?

thats what happoned to me, i was in the underworld getting a hellforge and i was crafting and i went back up and BAM there he is (i killed him (: )

@AwesomeSauce2020 same f****** thing happened to me! i got scared to death, and not only that eye thing, THE MOON HAS DISSAPPEARED! could it be a sign of.....something more deadly than herobrine?

I was going down my **** (yes I put the stars)****evator and then it said "You feel an evil presence watching you" so I said "What the...." and then it said "The eye of cthulhu has awoken!" then I thought oh crud.... I'm gonna die, but I used my enchanted boomerang and my potions and killed it. IT ALMOST KILLED MY NPCS!

@kratos111 It seems that Eye of Chtulu spawns at a ramdom moment in a random night.
Didnt know anything about it, i was a newbie.... :)
Now i have nice stuff, and i killed him over like 10 times by now

I had the same thing as others... It says an evil presence watches you and then... Eye Of Cthulhu awokens and I killed it with a golden broadword, golden bow with Jester's arrows and with shurikens. I can't even tell how my heart was beating :P
