He's defending a town in Occupied France against liberation by the Allies. The French people welcomed the allies. The Free French fought alongside in the Normandy Invasion, the French Resistance had been sabotaging German operations for years in France. I am sure that Spielberg did not intend for anyone to think he was a French sniper.
