Capitalism is the way the world works, whether we like it or not. President Obama is trying, against stiff opposition, to reign in the worst excesses of free market capitalism with his reforms of Wall Street. But Professor David Harvey, Marxist author of The Enigma of Capital says he's wasting his time. He tells Sarah Montague that capitalism is amoral and lawless, and should be overthrown.

  • BBC - less biased and close-minded questioning please. This isn't an interview and is frankly an embarrassment to BBC programming.

  • @decibel526 Don't you get it? She's asking questions to show off his knowledge and properly and completely explain questions that people may have.

  • @claroonarama I watched all the way through 1st time without looking at body language...2nd time I noticed the introduction and the tone of voice Montague uses with each paragraph in relation to the content of the statements. Luckily, David Harvey is knowledgeable enough to not be seen as foolish on this topic. To be fair, if the BBC was intent on discrediting the ideas I imagine they could have got someone less familiar with current & historical affairs in relation to what Marx says about them.

  • she's not too bright. Giving credit to capitalism for longer life expectancy is inductive reasoning beyond creationism.

  • Is this an interview? She won't let him talk!!!!! And why is she making faces all the time? Is this journalism?!!! What an embarrassment!

  • at 7:34 WHAT THE FUCK IS SHE TALKING ABOUT

  • The Zeitgeist Movement is the answer.

  • 7:23 ! I love you comrade Harvey! ^^

  • @Azivegu

hey man, where do you have your terms from? actually it doesn't matter that much how you call the systems, it matters what you grasp with a term. those countries didn't have free elections and didn't abolish capitalist problems. in fact they were even less free than western capitalism. so they sucked, too. maybe state capitalism is the better term.

  • @spischek socialism in russia, china and north korea??? I think you mean communism, the opposite of capatlism. Socialism allows a capatilistic system, but reigns in the excesses of corporation and reduces corruption. America is suffering from huge corruption (aka lobbys) and that is the problem.

  • @decibel526

definetely. always the same pretty stupid and shallow arguments: 1.) "humans are forever too stupid/evil/uneducated", 2.) "haven't you noticed socialism in russia, china and north korea?", 3.) "a better society (socialism) is just an utopia which leads to socialism a la stalin, mao and kim!"

when will people start realizing that these arguments are silly?
