@179rich It's more about the pressure of society to be perfect and then crumbling under that pressure. I think "cheerleader" was used, because it contextualizes that pressure into something more understandable, since they are usually viewed as being perfect.

I'm not saying that my interpretation is absolute :) I think Annie writes her music in an open-ended way, so that others can adhere their own personal meaning to it. I think it has a lot to do with the pressures of being perfect, but the Cheerleader metaphor should not limit or contextualize the story. We all know what its like to be judged, to struggle with anxiety, to work hard only to fail, and to codependent. Those are some of the main ideas that (i believe) are being conveyed here.
