from webpage "A U. S. Television Chronology, 1875-1970":
Mar. 10, 1940. W2XBS utilizes the Metropolitan Opera to broadcast a scene from an opera from its television studio. The audio portion is carried over radio station WJZ.
Dec. 23, 1943. The first complete opera, Hansel and Gretel, is telecast, by WRGB Schenectady.
This Toscanini "Aida" broadcast is from March and April, 1949. It is available on DVD from Testament, I've uploaded a few other bits of it to YouTube

Was it this performance that was the first opera broadcast on television?

Believe it or not the best baritone I ever heard sing this was an unknown named John Tenaglia in the early 80's. It was with the Haddonfield Symphony in South Jersey. The Radames was Richard Burke the Aida was Donna Roll. It's one of those performances that you never forget!....I always thought that Frank Guarerra was Toscaninis' favorite baritone?

my all time favorite recording is the 'falstaff' led by toscanini with valdengo. i'm happy to see and hear him in action, since he is a few generations removed from me. what a marvelous singing actor. thanks peter for posting this gem.
is that toscanini on the podium?

Well i coludn't tell you precisely, but it could be him, because Valdengo was his favourite baritone. Valdengo also wrote a book entitled " Ho cantato con Toscanini" (I sng with Toscanini).
