This video shows Douglas Yeo, bass trombonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, playing the serpent. He is playing a French church serpent by Keith Rogers (Christopher Monk Instruments, 1995, 2 keys, pre-ban python skin). The music is an etude by Jean-Baptiste Metoyen (Edute 11) from "Methode pour l'Education du Serpent Premier Ouvrage fait pour cet Instrument" (Paris, 1807-1810). This video is excerpted from his DVD, "Approaching the Serpent: An Historical and Pedagogical Overview." For more information about this DVD, visit http://www.yeodoug.com

  • It doesn't sound like any modern instrument directly. Perhaps a little soft euphonium combined with a hint of bassoon. the low notes sounding like alp horn (maybe). YMMV, of course. :3

  • Doesn't it sound like a really airy trombone? Interesting instrument.
