The concept to build Detroit's incinerator arose in the mid 1980's amid serious concerns about future landfill capacity. Protesters and environmentalists unsuccessfully campaigned against its construction, protesting against perceived public health threats and environmental impacts. Due to unexpected debt, the facility has been a huge financial drain on the city, alleviated partially by steam sales and other revenue generated from the incineration process.

  • I think incinerators are a great idea.Better than having all kinds of problems seeping into the ground in landfills.Steel is recyled. Those stupid environmentalist are never happy no matter what you do.You shut down the incinerator and tear it down then they will complain about the landfills and want it burned again.

  • What does gun violence have to do with pollution? Just because guns kill people more blatantly doesn't mean that we should have to breathe in toxic air.

  • Two thumbs up for the incinerators.

  • how about recyling programs instead of burning plastic and then drilling for more oil to make more plastic then breathe everything that goes into it? duh

  • Wow these people are stupid .. burning trash is a good way of making electricity .. Unlike coal and worst of all nuclear power plants .. I say they need to shut down every nuclear power plant and put more trash incinerators .. its safer and its a never ending source of energy . If people would recycle more instead of putting every thing in the trash then we wouldn't have to worry about our landfills shutting down so quickly .. I swear people are so dumb .

  • @Celestia69 I was about 10 or 11 years old when this thing opened and I still loathe it to this day. You see, to open this hunk of junk, the city chose to close several recreation centers around the city of Detroit, one of which was Hawthorne Rec in the northeast side of the D. Without a safe haven, many of my friends started selling drugs and joining gangs. This incinerator ruined my community. It ruined my childhood. It ruined the outcomes for many of my friends who are dead today due 2 gangs

  • @Mlwtca I am not an environmentalis but, Incineration is not the answer dioxins and furans are produced from burning plastic, styrafoam and rubber. These are known cancer causing agents. 50% of the cost of the plant is in the polution control devices and still these remain. The ash must be treated as a hazardous waste because it leaches carcinagens into the ground water. Destructive Distillation is the answer nobody on you tube has quite figured out how to do it yet. but, I have the answer.

  • Looks like hell.

  • Ha they were doing more than "speaking their mind".
