So what you're sating is that there is no common rules for what a shmup is? Cause I'm not looking for a personal definitions I'm looking for a global one. Cause it seems like everybody thinks that games like sub terrania is a shmup or halfshmup...maybe that's it! It's a shmupformer(mario and R-type secret love-child :P)
Borderland games does make it difficult to classify games...

How can I forget Thunderforce 3!
Nice video! I allmost allways like seening more shmups!
How ever I do have to say is Subterrania really a shmup? Cause to me a shmups is a vertical/horizontally scrolling game where you controll a ship(or some other kind of object) by strafing left, right, down and up. and shooting up most of the time...
So am I wrong is Subterrania a shmup?

@HarriHaffi It depends on personal definitions, really. Most people would say Subterrania is a borderliner, which means it has shmup elements but ditches automatic scrolling, which is one of the genre's foundations. I consider it a shmup solely for its shooting nature an graphical/musical/challenge excellence - a "gravity arena shmup".
Tks for the comment! :)

Musha aleste is my most memorable shmup from the 8/16 bit era. Axelay comes in close second.

Yeah, I also love Axelay. To this day I think it's the finest shmup on the SNES.
