  • t is right that he stayed a period in Valevåg between 1915 and 1924, but he really settled down there first in 1938. I don´t think there are as many as 25.000 unpublished etudes for piano, but I got to know that there are some works

that Valen never wanted to publish, they were meant for exercises (etudes). BUT- since you made me aware of this, I will -in a couple of weeks- go to Valevåg again to open the cupboard in his bedroom and look through these sketches!! Thanks!

  • Hi, thanks, I love this music too!

Well this was only a test from my side, with not a goo sound recorder. But thanks! And I will record and put out more of his music during this year as I am working on his music in an artistic research program for 3 years.

Which piano etudes are you referring to? The Bach fugue transcriptions? I don´t think they were ment to be played?

  • HI,

Very nice performance of this piece, Valen's music is very beautiful... I have been studying his compositions for several years now and am glad to learn of your coming studies of Valen's music and am excited to learn more of the many unpublished etudes mentioned below in the comments. Have you read Berit K. Tjome's book on Valen's use of sonata form or Kortsen's book on Valen? Valen's use of motivic structures in the piano pieces and songs especially interests and attracts me.

  • @AnnabelGuaita I am thrilled to think my small suggestion may contribute to your research and to Valen studies in general. Thank you!

  • @AnnabelGuaita Thank you! From the U.S. Wikipedia: "In 1916, he returned to Norway and took up residence at his family estate with his mother and sister in Sunnhordland where he started the most productive phase of his career, churning out more than 25,000 piano etudes (though they are not among his official works), while continuing to refine his own dissonant counterpoint." Is this true?

I am happy that you are researching Valen. I am the person who started the Valen group on Facebook, BTW.

  • I love the composer, this piece, and your performance.

My only comment is that the sound level on the video is very low. Is there any way that you could re-post this with a higher sound level?

Valen was a wonderful composer for piano (and for voice, and for orchestra, obviously). I am intrigued by the existence of many unpublished piano etudes. I would love hear you play them, actually.
