In August 2005, Aahung conducted a Training of Trainers (TOT) for members of the Child Development Organisation (CDO) situated in Johi-Dadu (interior Sindh). Soon after, the group found that implementing the Sexual Health Manual in their communities was a challenge due to widespread illiteracy. As a result, Aahung and CDO launched an experiment on using theatre as a tool to raise awareness and invoke discussion on sexual and reproductive health and rights related issues in the village of Johi.
A Theatre for Development training was then developed organized and conducted by the Aahung team in February 2006. It was participatory in methodology and used activities and games to develop theatre skills amongst the participants. The training also helped participants overcome their fears regarding interaction with members of the opposite sex, raise their voice in the face of injustice, and openly discuss sensitive issues. The resounding success of this training reinforces the effectiveness of theatre as a tool for disseminating essential information to diverse populations in an entertaining exciting, emotional and thought-provoking manner.
