A three collector, 120 gallon Velux solar hot water system was installed in the solar test home. Water in the solar storage tank is heated to 160 degrees using an antifreeze solution which circulates between the collectors on the roof and a heat exchanger installed inside the storage tank located in the garage. Domestic hot water is delivered at 120 degrees throughout the home summer and winter. Annually, this system generates 16 megawatts of free hot water using only sunlight. Velux now makes available a Solar Ready Water Heater. If your conventional tank breaks down today, You can have a Solar Ready Tank installed same day, and upgrade to Solar at your convenience. Solar Hot Water Systems account for only 0.02 % of the water heater repalcement market. Solar is Long overdue. Wow, an off grid castle in the making. The panels look heavy. Curious about price ranges on different sized systems. Can you buy DIY kits? Retrofit the heat exchangers into conventional water heaters?

Very nice roof units! Seems like a little overkill in terms of temps, amount of units. I beleive it can be alot simpler and less expensive, but again, if a person has the money, why not?
