  • Using an abacus early on can help reinforce this idea. The best Japanese mental mathematicians are all trained on abacuses--and are famous for being faster than people with calculators.

  • This reminds me of cognitive abstraction, like turning ten units into just one ten and then 10 tens into one hundred and so on. With cognitive abstraction complexity is an illusion.
