During the testing of the UPS system I drained the batteries rather low. To recharge the batteries I can either run the Diesel engine of the truck and use the alternator or I can use a smart charger that uses mains power. The battery bank is rated at 345 Amp hours at 24 Volts which takes several hours to charge. The alternator on the truck seems to output an average in the neighborhood of 50 amps at 28 volts while the car charger can only output 15 Amps at 14 volts.

Sorry for the shaky camera work, I didn't have any of my usual weights or stands with me.

For more information about my truck please check out my related videos or my website at http://www.sudoseth.com/blog

  • Do you always drain your air from the rear like that? Just as an FYI, if you don't know already, you should really drain your air tanks instead. The reason being is one of your tanks is designated the "WET" tank. If you allow the water to build up you will have brake failurw...no joke. Plus with the snow, eventually all that water is going to freeze and again...no brakes.

  • Thank you for your comment. I actually just learned the proper way to drain the air a day or two after this video was shot (from a someone on Steel Soldiers). It had about 100ml of water in the tank, so I'm glad I was taught how to let it out properly. Thank you again :)

  • There are also small diesel generators that a battery bank can recharge. Consumes much less fuel than a 6 cylinder diesel engine.

I myself made a generator with a 1 cylinder Kubota diesel engine type EA300 with mounted a 24 volt 75 amp Bosch alternator with a 3 stair master volt regulator.

type in Google Mastervolt and you find the alternators and the regulator, Balmar have also similar dynamo.

It runs very quiet and economical fast but safe charge the battery bank.

  • Any issues with wetstacking when you let her idle like that without an engine load?

  • I have 2pcs battery car which is 12v each, then is this possible that i can replace my ups battery into car battery? thanks

  • Do you have a detailed diagram of your battery setup? I was just staring at my old APC Smart-UPS 1400 tonight with dead batteries. I started thinking if I could use this in my m109a3, with a bank of deep cycle batteries. Now I see your truck, so I am not completely nuts in my thinking. I am also at Steel Soldiers

  • No problem, I too am a steelsoldier under the same name. Glad a fellow SS steered you in the correct location. Oh and by the way, your truck is outstanding!!! You got yourself a pretty rare truck. I too am looking for an '88 M109A3 or M185A3 w/w.

  • Very Cool! And that sure is a lot of snow!
