MaximsNewsNetwork: 20 January 2010 - WFP: Port-au-Prince, Haiti - The Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Josette Sheeran will travel to Port-au-Prince, Haiti on Thursday to assess the situation on the ground following last weeks devastating earthquake.

WFP began distributing food assistance within hours of the earthquake and has launched a US$279 million relief operation to reach 2 million Haitians as well as providing logistical and telecommunications support to the entire humanitarian community.

SOUNDBITE (English) Josette Sheeran, WFP Executive Director:
Just getting the goods in, the humanitarian flow of food and water and medicines, its a huge challenge so we are working with all partners in the world, with the military, with the government of Haiti of course and with all of the people trying to bring goodwill into Haiti.

During her two-day trip, Sheeran will visit those affected by the earthquake and meet government and relief agency officials. Sheeran will also meet with WFP staff members, many of whom have been injured and lost their homes, and continue to work around the clock in tremendously difficult conditions.

SOUNDBITE (English) Josette Sheeran, WFP Executive Director:
Well, I am headed into Haiti to look at the logistics of this operation myself, these are the among most complex logistics we have ever seen in a humanitarian operation in addition to the entire city being destroyed we have warehouses that have collapsed, we have roads closed, we have runways broken, we have ports damaged.

Since the earthquake struck, WFP has been streaming humanitarian assistance into Haiti, opening up air, sea and land corridors. So far, WFP has distributed approximately 1 million food rations to around 200,000 people in and around Port-au-Prince. ................................................................................................................
