Please excuse my sloppy playing as I never really got over punk rock.

Hammer of God / Marshall Jackhammer JH-1 info

The Marshall jackhammer JH-1 foot pedal was released at the Winter NAMM 2006 intended by Marshall to emulate the sound of their JCM 800 or 2000 amps. It kind of worked but it also sucked the tone right out of any guitar you plugged into it. Marshall made a myopic mistake in the way they designed the circuitry for this pedal which was not a bad idea and was made form great materials. In searching for that JCM sound they got blinded to what would make a good distortion pedal. Sure you can get massive gain and distortion out of it but what good does that do if it sucks your tone? Marshall discontinued the pedal in early 2009.

Enter the Hammer of God Mod.
I got my hands on one of these Jackhammers and was sorely disappointed with the afore mentioned tone sucking. So was everyone else who tried it as far as I can tell. The stock pedal has a versatile tone stack that works well. It also has a quasi parametric/sweepable active notch filter that also works well. The problem was with the gain structure. I set out to make this pedal live up to its potential. With a little hacking and switching out of one critical component (I'm keeping that secret for now) I created a monster pedal with responsive gain staging. What that means is that with the HOG mod, you can adjust the volume and gain knobs to get the kind of response you would expect out of a high quality boutique gain/distortion pedal costing 3 times as much. Singing sustain, touch sensitivity, quality clean boost, massive overdrive and distortion, it's all there. And the tone stack and active filter work as well or better than they did stock. The two modes on the JH-1 are called distortion and overdrive which switch between two distinct circuits. With the HOG mod those labels are no longer relevant (I'm not sure the were relevant in the stock version). Now both modes are drastically improved but are still two distinct circuits. The Overdrive has a little more girth and low end responsiveness now and the Distortion mode has a little more bite and air to it. I find that younger guitarist with better high end hearing prefer the overdrive mode and older guitarists seem to prefer the distortion mode.

I can mod a stock Jackhammer JH-1 to a Hammer of God for $100 including shipping and handling.

I can install a dying battery simulator which allows this pedal to enter the realm of a Tonebender MK II or the old Germanium boost/overdrive pedals with the turn of a knob. I will only do this mod as an add on for the HOG mod for $25.

I can also add in a three-way switchable asymmetrical clipping diode configuration for another $25 on top of the HOG mod. This uses germanium diodes to give variations of the distortion tone. It's a subtle effect compared to the HOG mod but does yield more flexibility for a wider selection of tones and distortion. At extreme gain settings the effect of these clipping mods becomes indistinguishable.

  • sounds horrible

  • @Chalo712

I checked out your channel. Going by that I'm not sure I trust your ear for tone. It seems we like different things.

  • interesting demo but i don't think it is worth an extra $100, and you really need to do a high gain demo...

  • @xntrickk

Allright I'll do a high gain demo. Though what I'm getting from these comments is that Metalers/Shredders are interested in the sound the stock Jackhammer makes in the bedroom. Trust me, stock, its useless on a stage. Nobody uses em. My mod makes em useful for sustain and tone at volume. Probably not that good for shredding metalers in the bedroom that seem to gravitate to the stock Jackhammer. Sorry if its not for you.

  • nice blue led... fart sound.

    I prefer Hammer of... JACK!

  • @P0rkPieHaT

Thanks for that comment. I'm starting to think the bright blue led is over the top. I don't know if you have tried to use the stock Jackhammer on stage or playing with a band but your not going to sound like Pantera with it. At least with my mod the pedal becomes useful.
