Matthias Lehner is an anagram of Arthas Menethil... everyone thinks he is the good spirit of the Dark Prince.

anyone can take it.. it starts near icecrown citadel, which leads to going underground and finding that "good" bit of arthas' soul and doing quests for him.. revealing stuff

That wasn't his soul you destroyed, it was his humanity. His soul is still there, but all that's left is the evil part of him. So he's beyond repentance. Also, if you read between the lines, you kind of realize it was Arthas' idea to take out his heart, not Ner'Zhul.
