On August 31, 2011 Canadian over-the-air television stations completed the transition from analog to digital. Unlike many news reports imply the switch does NOT mean an end to free, over-the-air television, in fact it means you can now get crystal-clear High Definition television for free with an antenna. In this report I look back at some of the history of television and explain what you need to do in order to receive free HDTV in Canada

  • @christopherve7alb ....so the freed up spectrum will be used by Wifi internet companies? .....I was scanning channels on Aug 31 and I was getting more than 26 DTv FTA signals. I was thrilled then disappointed as they disappeared from my list. Now I get just 17 dtv FTA channels in from Greater Toronto Area.

  • @WMsReligion WiFi and possibly cellphones or possibly some public safety stuff as well

  • All you need is a converter box for those living closer to the stations and for those living farther away you need a converter box along with a HD antenna placed at a height above the ground like the old antenna and pointing in the direction of the stations. The video is great and for those using a FTA system you already know how to connect the cable from the antenna to the TV.

  • When the US did this in June 09 it really messed up DXing for TV stations. As digital stations are either there or not. Plus they don't travel as far as analog. But I guess frequency space is money.

  • Yeah, they really downplayed it up there. South of the border, if you had a local station on even once between January and June 2009 you probably knew about the transition.
