My father was stationed there in the early to late 80's. Around the time of the chernobyl meltdown. Couldn't even go outside for a couple of weeks. Even though I was just a little army brat, it doesn't resemble the memories I have when my mother and I would go there to visit my dad when he was on duty. I remember those building right across from the entrance. I wish I could have been able to visit there before the buildings were demolished. Thank you sharing this.

Man that takes me back! it wasn't de-activated in 1992 though, I was stationed there with 2/3 FA from Oct 1991-Oct 1993. the base was transfered from 3rd AD to 1st AD somewhere in the mid november-early december 1991 but "the Rock" was open until atleast June 1995 because my best friend was still assigned to 2/3FA until his enlistment was up in June of 1995, Thanks for the trip back in time though! I Remember my time there fondly!

I started out in the 1st of the Sixth Infantry, B122 Maintenance, Hanau, then Clay Kaserne. I rode the trains every weekend to be with the band when I or them were not in the field. Cheyenne was the best to dance to!
My name is Ted Morell

I was stationed on the rock and taught photography at the photo lab once in a while. 1978-1982 I was the photographer for Herb's Band, Cheyenne, If you saw the band you probably saw me taking pictures. Rickdy Glenn played keyboard, Herb on lead, Tim Gardner was drummer, Bill was base, we had a great time playing at the Glass House in Friedberg and all over. A lady passed out when the strobe lights were rotating at the Glass House. We had a great time!

@teapartyty Holy Cow.. I am going over there for a vacation next week and wanted to see if my old post existed.... so I started doing some research about it on the internet... came across this video... I was in the same Unit!! started with 2/5 Cav in killeen...and was Cohort.. and i think it was really close to your time frame....... I was and 11 C.... E-5 Seargent Donohue... I know i drank some beer!!..lol
You are correct, the 1AD took over when we (3AD) moved out and finally cased our colors. I had the privilege of attending the closing of the Ray Barrack Garrison in Friedberg in 2007 when the 1AD left.

What, we're only supposed to have rosy comments about this? I hated the Rock.
Ireg2post1 2 years ago
No, not just rosy comments, but the FU comments were a little extreme. We got your message that you hated it there and respect your right to feel the way you do.
