I have yet to see this film. But you are darn right about the good men and chaos that war brings. Just because that man was on the other side doesn't make him an evil man. The Germans had thousands of brave men. The Japanese had the most bravery of all ( course there was a little alcohal involved ). Men, nomatter what country they hail from can be brave, and bravery makes a good soldier. War is hell, but think about this... What is the reason we fight. Is it for protection, or other gain?

Tha kind of war movie you've listed (which I've watched all of it) is a classic example of a Cliché war movie. Thin Red Line is a Deep philosophical poetic movie that leaves the audience questioning the meaning of life. Terrence Malick is a brilliant director. '' Our lives are not our own. From womb to tomb, we are bound to others. Past and present. And by each crime and every kindness, we birth our future. '' - Sonmi-451, Cloud Atlas

I may or may not be the best war film ever (but it's close), but it has what I consider to be the greatest staged battle scene ever. The scene on the hill when the Japanese attack for the first time is the most I've ever "felt" a battle scene. The way the camera moves as the artillery starts to rain down is so perfect it's hard to put into words. Saving Private Ryan may have been more visceral, but Spielberg's lack of subtlety is so overwhelming I always feel like I'm watching a movie.

It beats all of those, except maybe Schilder's List but that's not what I'd consider a "war movie". If you wanted to list films that were actually in TRL's class, you should have listed The Grand Illusion, Apocalypse Now, Patton, All Quiet on the Western Front, Battleship Potemkin, Das Boot, etc. I would still put TRL at or above all of those except Apocalypse Now and Grand Illusion.
