The amputee soccer players — formerly child soldiers of opposing rebel groups — are held up as the new hope of Liberia. The Amputee Football Federation of Liberia has already played in international matches in Sierra Leone and Russia. Now they're gearing up to go to Turkey. Although these players win medals, they still struggle to meet their basic needs.

After Liberia's 14-year civil war a generation of youth were left knowing nothing but war. Some remained in Liberia, while others fled to places such as Staten Island. Reporter Ruthie Ackerman and photographer Andre Lamberston travel from Staten Island to Liberia to explore the challenges facing youth in post-war Liberia and see what happens when they arrive on American soil.

This report is part of Pulitzer Center-sponsored project "Scars and Stripes: Liberian Youth After the War" (http://bit.ly/t8KLVT).
