The Moab Canyons Endurance Ride is FANTASTIC! And my Tennessee Walking Horse, Quite a Sugarfoot, did a GREAT job on her last ride of the season! Boy, what an athlete she is! We competed 2 out of the 3 days. She finished in the top 1/3 both times, and I wasn't even pushing her! On October 29, she finished 23rd out of 51. On October 31st, she finished 21st out of 62 competitors!! For you gaited riders out there...don't let ANYONE tell you that a gaited horse can't do endurance! On the last day towards the end of the ride, when the road opened up, I put my Sugarfoot into a 12-14 mph rack. I was riding with a group of 8 Arab riders that day and none of them could keep up with her racking at their trot! It was so cute! I was so proud of her! We racked out while they all cantered to keep up with us! Sugarfoot is a great ambassador for her breed. She got a LOT of compliments that day! The best after we had just racked out with amazing speed after around 20 miles or so into the ride & me sitting pretty in the saddle with everyone having to canter to keep up... "That horse is AMAZING!" It made me smile. Priceless! I LOVE MY GIRL SO MUCH!
For those of you who don't know much about Tennessee Walking Horses...they WERE NOT originally bred for the show arena. THEY WERE BRED FOR LONG DISTANCE RIDING FOR THOSE WHO WANTED TO RIDE IN COMFORT. The walker was the chosen horse of circuit riders -- traveling preachers riding from town to town (sometimes 50 miles or more between churches) to spread the gospel -- and as Margaruite Henry would say, as the preacher was preaching in the church, getting ready to go to the next little settlement church 50 miles from where he was preaching, his walking horse would be tyed out front, nodding and nodding in agreement to everything that was said! LOL
Thanks for the compliment on Sugarfoot! She is my best girl! I am so proud of her. I just found out last week we were in the top 20 for the Mountain Region (which encompasses WY, MT, ID, SD & CO) in limited distance for the 2009 season! Sugarfoot & I didn't get started in endurance until she was 7. Don't worry about your horse. She can do it! There is plenty of time! Sugarfoot & I are going into our 3rd season this year stronger than ever! Tennessee Walkers Rock!
