Here's another quote from a BBC article I read: violent crime in America has been plummeting for 10 consecutive years, even as British violence has been rising. By 1995 English rates of violent crime were already far higher than America's for every major violent crime except murder and rape.

London pop as of july 2007: 7,556,900

NYC pop as of july 2008: 8,363,710

On another note, while I'm on the subject of crime, in London you are 6x more likely to get mugged than in NYC in good old USA.
