As part of NWF's continued coverage of the Gulf oil spill we visit a jewel on the coast. In 2002, the Louisiana Wildlife Federation (LWF) embarked on a campaign to restore public access to Elmer's Island, a barrier beachfront and wetland complex located across Caminada Pass from Grand Isle, LA. Persistence paid off when, seven years later, LWF celebrated the reopening of the island to the public. Now, as giant globs of oil from the BP oil spill wash up on Elmer's shore, that hard won success has become bittersweet.
I can tell you personally that they have done a hell of a job cleaning the beach at Elmer's Island. Barring any future natural or man made disasters like the ones we have endured over the past 6 years i believe our beaches and coastlines will be at least as good as they were before Katrina, Rita, Gustav, Ike, and bp. At least i hope so... I can only hope that my children will have the same memories that i have of these places as a child.
