Ouch in still making that's the green screen of death. You only need enough heat to melt the solder, which is between 400-450F depending on brand of solder. If you heat the copper too hot you actually start melting/burning copper, which is why you get that green flame. If you're going to torch weld copper to copper then its ok I guess, but if you're just soldering you're weakening the copper for no reason.
If you're going to use it for distilling you should use silver solder or silver brazing. Any heating supply store will have it. It's used on the central air freon lines in your house.
If brazing you must get the copper parts cherry red, no flux needed.

Not so much torch needed. once the solder flows good back off the torch and wipe the joint with a wet rag!
