May 18 Mt St Helen's HARRY TRUMAN Tribute

I said good bye to a great 20th century American character, Harry Truman of Spirit Lake Washington. I took the last photos from the lake and was the fisrt tv crew in the air on the day the mountain roared to life.

Harry was an old man who had lived his life well...at least like he wanted. He said that he lived with the mountain and would die with the mountain. And 30 years on, those words still ring.

As for another famous mountain watcher, lest we forget about Davis Johnston, whose famous words, "Vancouver! Vancouver! This is it!" will live forever.

And I have a Nat Geo copy from May 1981...still see the pictures as fresh as if it just happened.

@worldpeace32 , Beautifull place it was..that is true...and he was at the age when he was close to the end even if MT Saint Helen's had not erupted... but if it had been me I would have gotten the hell out of there. my life is more important then  a home.

sorry harry, if the volcano had blown vertically, he might have had a 1% chance...instead it blew sideways and buried him. I assume if he survived, he would have been the unhappiest man with the outcome, and therefore, he was most likely pleased with the way he passed. RIP buddy

i remember this man from when i was 5 years old living in Milwaukee OR his story truly impacted me from when i was 5 years old , i will never forget that day looking at that mt, i snowed ash feet thick for days

did he say "im north east of the mountain" (something like that)..... its interesting that the north east side of the mountain completely collapsed and the "stuff" came down that way..... the exact opposite to what he said rip Harrry Truman

He was in his 80's what else is gonna do id stay and die too fuck it, too leave the world with everything you love is pretty cool and thats the way i would wanna leave also.
