This video was shot in December, 2009, during a four-day air crew layover in Senegal, West Africa

My friend Rich Fisher joined me on the trip. We traveled from the capital, Dakar, to the Sine-Saloum Delta region. Sine-Saloum, about five hours south from Dakar, is a protected area of mangroves, small islands and scattered villages

The players:

PATRICK SMITH cameraman and host
RICH FISHER willing accomplice
MUSTAPHA M'BAYE guide and fearless leader

Mustapha M'Baye also appears in the following story, originally written for Salon.com:

  • Patrick,

I love your writing. I've always wanted to visit Senegal and your video reminds me of what I love about travel in Africa: the beauty, the complexities, the contradictions, the warmth and pride of the people. Thanks so much for sharing this!

    Camille

  • Why are those people eating mud?

  • Only 24 views? Patrick, you should mention this vid on in your salon.com article.

Anyway, I like your writing style... and thanks for the video upload.

    Cheers.
