For nine months, from 1864 to 1865, the Union Army of the Potomac lay siege to General Lee's Army of Northern Virginia in the trenches surrounding Petersburg, Virginia.
Near the end of this presentation, you'll see the site of the notorious "Battle of the Crater," where an attempt was made to explosively breach the Confederate lines.

At 02:30 you can hear the gunfire coming from nearby Fort Lee where they do modern day combat training. I heard a LOT of machine-gun fire when I was there.
