The 36 class first started appearing on Main line railways in NSW from 1925, albeit black without headlights. When the Clarence river double deck bridge was completed, the 36 class could run all the way to South Brisbane terminal. They were the premier express steam locomotive until 1943, when the 38 class 4-6-2 was introduced. The end of the 36 class was not spelt until the introduction of the 40, 41, 42, and 44 class diesel co co locomotives came in the mid 1950s and 1960s NSWGR
