My technology class at Evergreen Community Charter School in Asheville, NC had an opportunity to Skype with former NFL quarterback and Superbowl XXXIV MVP, Kurt Warner. I follow Kurt and a variety of other NFL athletes on Twitter. Kurt is very active on the social networking site and asked his followers if anyone would like Skype with him and what they might like to talk about. I responded, telling him that I was sure my middle schoolers would have a few questions for him... He selected me as his #lucky13 winner and we set it up. The kids were so excited when they found out.
To me, the opportunity further illustrated my point about social media empowering individuals. I asked Kurt to talk a little bit about the risks of social media and the digital footprint that we leave when posting content online. It's a point that I try to make frequently throughout the school year as these students are so young and we hardly know the implications of this media in years to come. All in all, it was by far one of my favorite and most memorable experiences in the classroom.
Here is the entire video from the Skype call. I hope to find some time to edit it down to a 2-3 minute video at another time.
