I've caught Dave Douglas (b 24 March 1963) live in a number of settings, as bandleader, member of Masada, and other ensembles, and he always raises the bar. He's lived in New York much of his life, and is a prolific and original trumpet player and composer. He's been nominated twice for a Grammy Award and won many awards. Dave's solo career began in the early 1990s, and since then he has released over 30 recordings on many labels. For the past half decade he's recorded for his own label, Greenleaf Music. On Greenleaf, Dave has released albums with his long standing quintet, the electronic sextet Keystone, and the mixed chamber ensemble Nomad. In 2009, he released Spirit Moves with his new brass quintet, Brass Ecstasy and his first big band recording, A Single Sky, a collaboration with Jim McNeely and Frankfurt Radio Bigband. His latest release brings a new work by Keystone entitled, Spark of Being, a retelling of the Frankenstein myth in collaboration with award-winning filmmaker Bill Morrison. Dave Douglas is currently the artistic director of the Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music at the Banff Center and the co-founder and director of the Festival of New Trumpet Music, which is celebrating its 8th year in 2010.
"Charms Of The Night Sky" is the title track from a 1997 Winter & Winter release featuring Dave Douglas on trumpet, Guy Klucevsek on accordiion, Mark Feldman on violin and Greg Cohen on bass. I consider it one of Dave's finest and most melodic recordings. Dave's website and blog can be found at http://www.davedouglas.com

Possibly unique instrumentation and beautiful textures. Great playing. The violin solo is the best part! (during the head the violin could be louder in the mix).

I have this cd and I love it!!!

This track is great. And the cd has a unique instrument combination; trumpet, violin, accordion and bass. Combine that with astounding musicianship while playing organic compositions, frequently including Eastern European elements, and you have a special jewel of a recording.
