Tempo is extremely important in Sousa marches. I've heard many bands perform these marches too fast and the style is totally different. There are also many versions at different levels of difficulty for the marches which is great for bands of every skill level! :)

I had the opportunity to study with David Epstein years ago and the most important element to him was tempo. He's written a few books about the tempo relationships between movements in orchestra pieces - brilliant work, check them out if you can.
