I think Hayao Miyazaki was just beginning his stride as a high-profile director and animation storyteller when he was creating Conan. He was probably also working on Cagliostro Castle as he was working on this, and had other stories in the works as well. Nausicaa (1984) would come a few years later, and Laputa (1986) would actually be heavily influenced by many of the story and character elements in Conan.

I haven't seen this anime before, but I read about it on wikipedia. Sounds pretty cool, except for all the destruction. but, hey, I can deal.
