That was really nice to see how you helped this pony. I think in this severe case your decisions worked well. What I don't agree with are the farriers that put shoes on every horse that is foundering when a proper trim could do the job. Too bad all farriers would not learn both the traditional ways PLUS the natural barefoot trims. Horses would suffer far less.
