71000 was following a Nat Ex 125. I wish they wouldn't put slow traffic in front of such an athletic beast. The power could be seen as 71000 powered up the bank from Alnmouth towards Longhoughton on the ECML. If ever the argument between Steam and diesel traction needed proof that steam could still work... this is it.
Can't wait to see 'Tornado' powering through here.
It justifyably is the 'Clark Kent' of Steam Locomotives.... can't wait to see it on the Main Line

@radeakins Defiantly, the steam locomotives are indeed cheaper now than diesel, and it is closer to human beings than the best Artificial Intelligent computers of today.

B*gger me! The Duke always seems to run fast -In February, I saw her zip north through Durham like a streak of green lightning, and later heard that she had (slightly) overshot a red light up near Newcastle. Great clip, thanks.

Bring back steam? Answer: they should.
To get technical, steam locos are actually a cheap option now. Coal price is low, water is still cheap and diesel fuel costs a fortune.
(Full tank on disesel: £4200 aproX. Steam {71000}: £640 for coal and water)

The Duke was probably doing 80mph there! I really think this loco should be allowed to run at 90mph.

I'm not a bog steam fan (preferring diesel) but that was mightily impressive! Nice one.
