"Friends Beyond Borders Social Justice Trip 2011"
We visited a batey, one of the many places where Haitian immigrant workers and Dominicans of Haitian decent live in extreme poverty. Few people have electric, running water, or even something other than a dirt floor below their feet. After seven years of the Friends Beyond Borders project, we are fortunate to have many good friends in this batey. The group was invited to an evening of celebration filled with Gagá (aka Rara) music. One of the things we are interested in exploring on the trip is the influence of African culture in Dominican life. The music we heard that night celebrates African traditions, featuring traditional instruments such a tua-tua home, vaksen (bamboo trumpets), cha-cha maracas, the snail conch, and whistles. The word "gaga" is said to indicate someone is not in their normal state of mind. . . they are lost in the frenzy of the music.
This was recorded on last summer's "Friends Beyond Borders" Social Justice Tour in the Dominican Republic. The group visited with activists, teachers, community leaders, and everyday people to learn about globalization and human rights from a variety of perspectives and in a variety of contexts.
