** WATCH THE HIGH QUALITY ONE **
Hey all,
Let it be known that I LOVE SEGA.
I love Sega so much that I don't even mind how much they've gone downhill recently because when I was young they were THE COOLEST COMPANY EVER, and that's all that matters. I'm 26 years old now, so if gaming disappeared I wouldn't mind if no new games ever came out, as I'd still have these lovely memories to cherish forever...
Two of these lovely memories are the first two Streets of Rage games (but not so much 3).
Yuzo Koshiro did a lovely live SOR mix at a club:

And I decided I want to do one, too, as he mixed songs from 1, 2 and 3 whereas I'm interested in adding more songs from 1 and 2 and not bothering with the SOR3 tracks.
This is just a proof-of-concept as I've only been using Ableton Live for a day or two and haven't clicked around much past the beat repeat (which in itself is easily the coolest thing ever).
Now the juicy stuff - why the hell does it start off sounding like a Master System?
Using Gens (or any MD emulator), you can record the sound output to a wave file, and more interestingly, you can choose which of the Megadrive's sound chips to emulate (YM2612, PSG and DAC).
So I just popped over to the SOR2 sound test, started a recording, turned on one of the channels and started playing the stage music. Once it looped round to the beginning of the song I stopped the recording, changed the sound channel and then replayed the song, recording to a new file. Rinse and repeat for the last chip and I now have three separate 'tracks' for the stage 1 music. A bit of fine-tuning in Acid Pro to line them all up correctly and that was that.
Of the three tracks, the first has most of the sound going on, the second sounds like a Master System and the third is a bit of the beat (annoyingly, the rest of the beat is in the first track)
I can probably fiddle the first track a bit more to separate the beat from the melody to have four tracks to play with, but so far it's working out great.
*UPDATE* I've found out the ultimate track ripping method - record the sound as a .VGM file using Gens, then play it back on Winamp using the VGM plugin. Winamp lets you select individual channels (i.e. all EIGHT channels!) and then just save those by choosing WAV writer as Winamp's output. It's long-winded, but you end up with the original channels Yuzo himself would've made, instead of three which are combinations of those eight!
I'm not sure which other console emulators (SNES, for example) can do this as well. I wonder if the CPS1/2 emus can, getting the SF2 music like that would be sweet!
p.s. it goes a bit crazy and crap near the end as this mix was meant as a taster for my good friend DJ Lordstar so while doing it I suddenly remembered I could do the beat repeats for the other tracks so just started clicking randomly for fun :)
so when are you going to improve on this? this is awesome i DEFINITELY get what you mean towards the end, it gets a bit crazy but thats alright i guess. but it is an AWESOME tune. when are you going to re-do it? if you already have can you give me the link?

I've been really busy with finishing uni and working and stuff but as it gets closer to Winter and I'll find myself indoors more, hopefully I'll get cracking. Definitely planning on making my long SOR mix soon.
I've got most of the songs I want already, just need to split them into separate tracks and come up with ideas!
p.s. the ending was a joke for my friend as I wanted him to go WTF???
Didn't think I'd put it on Youtube at the time or else I'd have ended it properly :)

Your download is broken

@HyperSonicXtreme
Yeah sorry about that, I removed it by accident along with some other sound files. Worse still, all the original files are gone, too, including the Ableton project, etc. I want to do a proper one so starting from scratch might be a better idea than just taking this one and adding to it. I hope!
