That restaurant was fantastic BEFORE we were at our table ; I mean, it's very pretty, I love the old Paris style, and it's pretty cheap, but the table was so small that we were almost eating in the same plate, and people beside us (on both side) were literally eating in our ears ! Seriously, how can you enjoy a dinner in those condition, even if the food is great ? I'm someone very sociable, but it was too much and we left right after the appetizer... Too bad.

I'm sure the other diners were pleased to see you leave. Are you American ? Like to have everything your own way ? Then, stay in America. I was in Chartier three days ago and thoroughly recommend it to all but the most ignorant.

Not a place for xenophobes then?
One of the joys of eating at Chartier is that you meet complete strangers and chat with them.
Don't forget to write you own "addition" on the paper table cloths.
I've been going there for over forty years. No tourists then; but otherwise little has changed except there is no longer sawdust on the floors.

I'm reluctant to take advice from someone who lacks the insight to understand the context of a statement. The probably wasn't that they were Asian, it was that we were seated so close, I could braid their hair at dinner.

@pleasance, France is full of different people due to involvement in Africa and Indo-China. They are as French as French could be. The waiter's family could have been be from Vietnam.
