Today I would like to share with my subscribers, to whom I am deeply grateful and for whom I hold deep affection, a song by the late great Nick Drake. It is not just a good song, it is a great song, deserving, I hope, of a moment of your time. It is entirely appropriate that 'Mary Jane' (an oft-used nickname for marijuana) should appear on the album 'Five Leaves Left'. Five leaves left, according to Nick's biography 'Darker Than The Deepest Sea' is the notification one receives when one has only five cigarette papers left in a pack, reminding one to buy more before one runs out (I appear to have gone all posh all of a sudden). Anyways, Nick was known for his fondness of the herb (aka wacky backy, aka miraculous tobbaculous) and whilst there is no mention in this song of the smoking of such illicit substances the lyrics are, I feel, indicative of stonedness and have an other-worldly beauty. There are proven links between the smoking of 'mary jane' (aka pipeweed - to Hobbits that is!) and psychosis, which may well be why I am rambling on in this inane manner (only kidding mum!!). Regardless, I hope you will take a moment from your busy lives and sit and think thoughts of Mary Jane, whoever, whichever and wherever she may be. On that note I will draw to a close this gentle reflective stream of whimsy and caprice... and Nick, if you are listening, please would you lend a hand and lift me to your place in the clouds?

  • nice work - you're the first person I've seen on YouTube attempt to play the ending right - I thought you played the whole thing slower so you could play the ending slower but you actually sped it up at the end (it's not easy, I've been trying to learn it myself) - and then you go into that other song...almost like a Nick Drake Medley...that would be awesome to see live

  • yeh, that ending is tough to play. I like to slow nick drake's songs down a bit, makes them a bit easier and brings out the soul. there are lots more nick drake covers on my channel if you are interested.. thanks for watching

  • I think in the past 2 days I've probably watched about 15 of your videos! (Yes, I really do have another life). I can't thank you enough for the special treats. It gives me something beautiful to carry along in my head as I make my bicycle commute through the city.

  • thanks so much.. I am happy that you carry my music with you! all the very best
