  • If you are considering modular or prefab home, building with recycled shipping containers is worth taking a look at.

Good resource is the Residential Shipping Container Primer website. A SHOWCASE OF SHIPPING CONTAINER HOMES AND BUILDINGDS, AND A DO IT YOURSELF (DIY) REFERENCE FOR CONVERTING RECYCLED INTERMODAL CARGO SHIPPING CONTAINERS INTO BUILDINGS AND? ARCHITECTURE.

Lots of great example buildings, details, facts, and links to other articles...

  • do the stairs go on the outside?

great design for a nice house...

  • what was the price then verses now friend?

  • ... I guess they both have theire drawbacks, nice to be anchored but not if the water gets so deep that it turns into a submarine, then again i wouldnt like to be floating away either, the implications are all pretty big, i mean what you are talking about really is to make the box watertight in any case and watertight=airtight. my guess's probably a box with a chain attached to a foundation that can be made watertight quickly, has all furniture fixed, etc

    good luck...

  • @ RCvolunteer1978, the video seen here is nor more than a rough concept by the look of it, that said a container is a very strong box, designed to be stackable, up to 12 high when empty(one 20ft ISO weighs roughly 2.3 tons. rough dimensions are 6x2.5x2.5meters) when it comes to storms, chances are you'll put windows in making weak spots in the shell. I guess you could provision stormshutters etc... in terms of floating vs anchor...

  • just wondering if the cargotainers could with stand Hurricanes like Katrina or Andrew. Are they 8 by 8 by 48 ft correct ???would be better to have them float in the storm surge or anchor solded into the earth ??? could a foolish owner stay in side one as a Katrine with 17 ft storm surge in a two story cargotainer home ???

  • neat design. Gotta love cargotainers, I don't know if I will ever get a chance to build my design, the price on them have skyrocketed since 2002 when I bought a few 40 foot cargotainers.
